CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Vail Resorts is buying two Midwest ski areas for a total of million in cash in its first move into the nation’s heartland. The ski resort operator said late Thursday that it will acquire Afton Alps in Minnesota and Mount Brighton in Michigan, facilities geared towards visitors from the Minneapolis-St. Paul and Detroit metro areas, respectively. Vail added that it intends to “upgrade and enhance the experience at each resort and create opportunities to connect guests from each of these ski areas to its seven world-class resorts in Colorado and Lake Tahoe.” Among the planned improvements are redesigned terrain parks, racing programs and expanded dining and entertainment outlets. It also plans to add more snowmaking capabilities.
