Euro-zone Dec. jobless rate at record 10.4%

FRANKFURT (MarketWatch) — The unemployment rate in the 17-nation euro zone was 10.4% in December, unchanged from an upwardly revised December figure that marks the highest jobless rate for the area since before the January 1999 launch of the shared currency, the European Union statistical agency Eurostat reported Tuesday. The figure was in line with forecasts. The number of unemployed in the euro zone rose by 20,000 to 16.469 million in December, Eurostat said.
