CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Carnival Corp. said Friday that is launching a “comprehensive audit and review of all safety and emergency response procedures” in the wake of the fatal wreck of its Costa Concordia vessel off the coast of Italy last week. In that incident, the captain has been criminally charged with leaving the ship prematurely, abandoning his passengers to their fates. The company noted that it, and the industry as a whole, have an “excellent” safety record but Chief Executive Micky Arison said “this tragedy has called into question our company’s safety and emergency response procedures and practices.” The safety review will be overseen by James Hunn, a retired Navy captain and the company’s senior vice president of maritime policy and compliance. Shares of Carnival were down about 2% in midday action.
