Argentine stocks climb, set for weekly gain
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Argentine equities climbed Friday, with the market’s benchmark stock index poised to log a gain of more than 11% for the week, and Brazilian stocks were modestly higher, trading around 3% higher week to date. Both stock markets got a boost after the U.S. reported a decline in its unemployment rate for December. Argentina’s Merval rose 1.1% to 2,743.82, up 11.4% from a week ago. Financial stocks were among the gainers, with Grupo Financiero Galicia up 2%. Brazil’s Ibovespa tacked on 0.1% to 58,600.94, with shares of conglomerate Hypermarcas up 6%. Elsewhere in Latin America, the Chile IPSA was up 0.3% and Mexico’s IPC added 0.1%.
